Top 10 Cars from the ‘Fast and the Furious’ Franchise

fast and the furious cars

Whether you love the movie or hate it, The Fast and the Furious is the biggest car-related pop culture phenomenon of the last 15 years.

It premiered in 2001, and since then stunt drivers drove and destroyed hundreds of cars on set over the course of eight films.

And while you might want to credit the plot, the acting, and the hot women as the reason you watch, you know it’s really all about the cars.

So read on to learn our top ten The Fast and the Furious cars.

Toyota Supra

The Fast and the Furious took Japanese performance cars and threw them into the mainstream in a huge way. In the first film of the franchise, The Fast and the Furious, the Toyota Supra sported a creamsicle-orange paint and bold graphics.

While they’re probably more than a little dated for today’s market, back in 2011 there was nothing cooler. The Mark IV Supra is a sports car from an era when it seemed like Japan ruled the automotive industry.

In the 2001 flick, Brian O’Connor (played by the late Paul Walker) outran a Ferrari F355 in his Supra.

Nissan Skyline GT-R R34

While the R34-generation Skyline GT-R had a top spot in 2 Fast 2 Furious, the one that showed up in the fourth film of the franchise is much sleeker and cleaner, nicer to look at. The Skyline GT-R in Fast and Furious looked incredible.

Before the current R35, the GT-R was based on the Skyline and wasn’t sold in the United States, making it a trophy car for people who grew up driving it while they played Gran Turismo.

Dodge Charger

Dominic Toretto (played by Vin Diesel) drove a version of the Dodge Charger in almost every single one of the Fast and the Furious movies in the franchise. The very first one he drove was an intimidating black charger with a huge blower popping up out of the hood.

The car in the movie could even do wheelies.

The Charger hit us with a pretty incredible image on screen, but off screen, the second gen Dodge Charger is the most iconic muscle car made in America. And The Fast and the Furious isn’t even the only time it made the big screen. It has also shown up in The Dukes of Hazzard and Bullitt.

Yenko Camaro

As sporty as foreign cars tend to be, there is just no replacing a nice American muscle car. 2 Fast 2 Furious sported a lot of flashy cars, some of them not so classic. But it sold the movie based on a car from the golden age of muscle cars.

Don Yenkno built a custom Camaro that Chevy didn’t have the guts to build itself. At its heart is a much more powerful engine than a standard Chevy would.

The Yenko Camaro is ridiculously cool, sure, but it also starred in one of the most memorable scenes from 2 Fast 2 Furious. This car jumped onto a moving yacht.

Beat that, Chevrolet.

Mazda RX-7

During the Fast and the Furious franchise, we saw a lot of cars with crazy modifications. But the Mazda RX-7, FD-generation, might be the craziest of all of them.

It was sporting a Veilside body kit, which set it apart from Mazda’s other rotary sports cars so much so that it was barely even recognizable.

Unfortunately, the car and the driver didn’t make it out of the movie, but the car lives on in legend today.

The FD was the last generation of the RX-7, giving the rotary-engine sports car new performance levels and unmatched prestige.

Ford Mustang

We’re back to those American made cars again. You might belong to one of two camps when it comes to this particular Fast and the Furious car: one that thinks it’s one of the best and one that thinks it’s probably not.

No matter where you fall on that scale, you can’t deny that it’s one of the most memorable cars of the movie. Why? Because it didn’t have a traditional American V8 under the hood. It was sporting the RB26DETT inline-six from a Nissan Skyline GT-R.

They made this change out of necessity in the movie, the main characters needed to build a drift car and the only one they had was an engineless mustang.

Oddly enough, real life drifters tend to switch out their engines for American V8s.

Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport

While this roofless Corvette only spent a few minutes on screen, they were memorable minutes. This poor car was launched off a train under a rain of gunfire. They jumped the car and drove it off of a cliff – all in a matter of minutes. But we already knew this franchise was action-packed.

Don’t confuse the Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport with the modern version based on the C7-generation Corvette. They built this one for racing.

The 1963 Grand Sport was built as a pet project of Zora Arkus-Duntov, Corvette’s chief engineer and they only built five original cars.

The ones in the movie were replicas, but we don’t blame them for not wanting to total one of these babies.

Jensen Interceptor

The further into the franchise you go, the more interesting the car choices get. By the time the sixth movie came around, writers must have felt like they had used up all of their more obvious choices. So they went with something a little different, like the Jensen Interceptor.

The car has an interesting name for sure, but it was also birthed from a strange combo of different elements.

A tiny British firm called Jensen built it. It housed a Chrysler V8 and was styled from Italy’s Touring design house. One version of the car even featured all-wheel drive. It was one of the first road cars to do so.

Dodge Challenger

During the least-probable stunt in all of the franchise’s history, the Dodge Challenger was dropped out of the back of a plane.

But as unbelievable as the stunt was, the late-model Challenger still looked pretty cool doing it. It probably helped that Letty Ortiz, played by Michelle Rodriguez, was behind the wheel.

This car sported retro graphics, a shaker hood, and front armor to finish off the look.

W Motors Lykan Hypersport

The W Motors Lykan Hypersport is billed as the Middle East’s first supercar. So it makes sense that it was featured in the seventh movie in the franchise when Dom and his crew went to Abu Dhabi. This car only had a glimpse of fame when it jumped between a trio of skyscrapers, but it will live on forever in our hearts.

The Hypersport sells for $3.4 million and is one of the most expensive cars in the entire world. It has a 3.7-liter turbocharged flat-six that was developed by Ruf, the famed Porsche tuner. It has 770 horsepower, which is enough to push the car from 0 to 60 in under 3 seconds.
