Hollywood Hair: Balding Celebrities Who Reversed Their Hair Loss

bald man with hands covering face

By the age of 35, two-thirds of American men will experience some degree of hair loss. And by age 50, around 85% of men have significantly thinning hair.

But the worst part is, while you’re losing the hair you want to hold on to, you have to keep battling against unwanted body hair. First, there’s the nose hair we have to remove, then there’s hairy ears to tend to, not to mention the potential dangers of manscaping.

Of course, while hair removal is more about hygiene and keeping things neat, many balding men choose to embrace the Bruce Willis look.

But, many Hollywood actors aren’t quite as keen on going hairless as Bruce. Here are some balding celebrities who have chosen to reverse their hair loss.

John Travolta

Mention the phrase ‘celebrity hair transplants’ and chances are, the first name on everyone’s lips will be John Travolta.

With a life shrouded in secrecy, from his sexuality to his position within the mysterious church of Scientology, Travolta’s hair might be the least mysterious thing about him.

After all, the thinning hair he had back in 2011 is somehow now as full and bouncy as the locks he slicked back as Danny Zuko in “Grease”.

Nicholas Cage

Travolta’s co-star in the 1997 movie “Face/Off” is another in a long line of balding male actors who seems to have reversed his hair loss.

Like Travolta, Nicholas Cage sported a receding hairline in 2011 and then reappeared three years later with a darker, fuller head of hair. Maybe the two Hollywood stars got a 2 for 1 deal on their hair transplants.

James Nesbitt

Trust the no-nonsense actor James Nesbitt to tell it like it is. Unlike other formally bald celebrities, the Northern Irish star has openly admitted to having hair transplant treatment.

In fact, he’s so pleased with the amazing results, he’s stated the two surgeries he had have changed his life.

Billy Bob Thornton

Billy Bob Thorton has never been a handsome man, although that didn’t seem to put Angelina Jolie off.

But, in 2002 he had some very thinning locks that did little to enhance his appearance. These days, the Goliath actor has a much fuller head of hair we’re sure is down to a hair transplant.

Matthew McConaughey

Those thick and curly locks haven’t always been a permanent fixture on the Oscar-winning actor’s head.

Matthew McConaughey’s mug shots from his 1999 arrest for marijuana possession show him with a receding hairline. Then, before he was crowned as People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive in 2005, he had somehow reverted back to his old hairline.

And this time, McConaughey’s holding on tight to his hair. Images of him from the 2019 movie “Serenity” show his flowing locks back to their former glory.

Edward Norton

As one of our favorite underrated actors, we’ve marveled at some of the excellent performances Edward Norton has put in over the years.

But, we have to admit, his hairline seems to have changed since his 1998 role as a reformed neo-Nazi in “American History X”. In the movie, Norton had a shaved head complete with receding hairline. Nowadays, his hairline seems much more even, so we’re thinking he might be another actor who’s battled with celebrity hair loss.

Jude Law

With his new role as a young Dumbledore, you might be wondering whether Jude Law resorted to magic to hide the balding look he sported back in 2013.

There was speculation that Law had joined the long list of celebrities with hair plugs after he was seen with fuller locks the following year.

That said, in the latest “Fantastic Beasts” movie, Law’s hairline seems to be receding again. Unless of course, that’s down to the makeup department trying to make him seem a better fit for Dumbledore’s distinguished shoes.

Ben Affleck

Most of the celebrities on this list have experienced hair loss at the front of their hair, with receding hairlines being a major problem for men who make money from their appearance.

But, Ben Affleck’s hair loss is concentrated at the crown of his head, as images of his shorter cropped hair revealed back in 2008. These days, he seems to have reversed this problem with a hair transplant. Although, there’s also a lot of speculation he might be one of the many male celebrities with toupees.

Sean Penn

As Jeff Spicoli in “Fast Times at Ridgemont High”, Sean Penn’s luscious blond locks made generations of young people want the same hair.

But, by the late 1990s, Penn’s hair was a shadow of its former glory, with an uneven receding hairline that did him no favors. These days, his hair is back to its floppy, flowing best, possibly thanks to a hair transplant.

Steve Carrell

Back in 2007, Steve Carrell had some serious thinning at the front of his hair, as well as signs of a receding hairline.

But, rumors of a Steve Carrell hair transplant have been circulating since he emerged around 2011 with thicker locks and a more even hairline. Whether his new look is due to surgery or some clever combing, our favorite funny man sure looks a lot more sophisticated these days.
