There’s no doubt that the church has struggled to reach the masses in recent years. Indeed, a solid 66% of teenagers cease attending once they leave the nest of the home. This is due in large part to the actions of those who take the name of Christian but do not live up to the teachings.

You may not be able to do anything about this on a societal scale, but the change can start within. If you want to learn how to be a better Christian, read on to learn 5 basic tips.

1. Don’t Just Talk the Talk: Walk the Walk

The biggest issue Christianity faces in the modern era is that the vast majority of the populace who claim the label only talk the talk of faith. They loudly declaim sin from the pulpit while hiding sin in their own lives. They call upon others to help people but offer nothing of help to the needy in return.

They refuse to associate with the poor, the downtrodden, and the outcast, believing they did something to deserve their circumstances. Yet, Christ Himself walked with the lowest of the low. If you would call yourself Christian, you should do the same.

2. Put Love First

Doctrine and dogma, combined with the politicizing of the church itself, have led to the bitterest anger and hatred at the worldliness of the times spewing forth from those standing behind the pulpit. Many who would claim the name of Christian are all too eager to declare those who have no place standing at their side.

Yet, God calls us to love our neighbors, even when we disagree with them. Even when those disagreements occur on a fundamental level. Put love first.

3. Journal Your Faith Journey

If you want to know how to be more religious, here’s another tip: Journal your faith journey. It’s not enough to memorize and regurgitate the verses. You must read them, meditate upon them, and journal the insights you glean from them.

4. Acknowledge and Repent Your Sins

Going to church every Sunday is all well and good. However, if you do so with abuse, violence, envy, and anger in your heart, it accomplishes little. Acknowledging where you fall short can be a painful process, but it is a necessary one.

Recognize where you have committed evil, or allowed evil to flourish, then repent your behavior.

5. Let Go, and Let God

One of the greatest benefits of religion is the surety that something awaits us in the great beyond. The certainty of an almighty being watching over you has a way of keeping you calm even through the direst of circumstances. You must be willing to let go, and let God do His work.
