1. Ready Player One
It’s tough to find a genuinely original action movie. Perhaps that’s why Ready Player One was one of our best movies of 2018.
The premise is simple: the citizens of a bleak future America are now spending most of their time in a virtual world. Things start heating up when our protagonist, Wade Watts, begins a quest to find the true keys to this digital kingdom.
There are unforgettable set pieces, cool action sequences (like the Back to the Future car versus King Kong), and more pop culture references than you can shake a virtual stick at!
2. Avengers: Infinity War
Marvel took the world by storm in 2008 with the first Iron Man. In many ways, Avengers: Infinity War is a culmination of a decade of awesome films.
Whether you love Marvel or simply love action, this movie has a lot to love. We get to see some of the most magnetic Marvel personalities sharing the spotlight, and there are enough cool action scenes to fill three or four standard movies.
Come for snarky Robert Downey, Jr., and stay for the major showdown of every hero versus Thanos!
3. Deadpool 2
You caught us: there are two Marvel movies on this list. But there was no way we were going to do a “top five” without naming Deadpool 2!
The first film was a kind of revelation, effortlessly blending cool comic action with hilarious comedy and absolutely filthy dialogue. Fortunately, the sequel manages to live up to the original in a number of exciting ways.
There’s more action, bigger fights, and even more Ryan Reynolds. What’s not to love about Deadpool fighting Juggernaut?
4. Incredibles 2
Action fans sometimes turn their noses up at cartoons. However, Pixar is surprisingly skilled at bringing top-notch action, and the proof of this is Incredibles 2.
The film still manages to incorporate the family bond that helps these heroes feel like more than just another spandex super squad. But the action sequences in this sequel (like Elastigirl defusing a train bomb while riding a motorcycle) take the intensity of the first movie and dial it up to eleven!
While we’re hoping for some awesome action in 2019, Incredibles 2 set a really high bar for everyone else. And it certainly tickled our inner manchild.
5. Mandy
Mandy is kind of the dark horse candidate on this list. It’s a movie that many have never seen…but once you watch, it’s impossible to forget!
At first, the movie seems like a straightforward homage to the genre of 1970’s revenge horror films. Soon, though, it becomes a vehicle for an absolutely manic Nicholas Cage to use a mystical weapon to fight biker demons and crazy cultists.
